4 times Jonathan Cumminga refused to play before the trade

The Jonathan Cumminga the era is over for Golden State Warriorsand now that the two sides have parted ways after a rocky relationship, alleged details are beginning to emerge, showing us just how bad things were before Golden State traded Cummings to the Atlanta Hawks.

While it has been known for some time that Kuminga and Warriors head coach Steve Kerr they did not see eye to eye, which was evident in Kuminga’s uneven and, at times, non-existent playing time. The situation looked to be at its worst this season, when a healthy Kuminga sat out 16 straight games in what was believed to be entirely Kerr’s decision. However, the sources of the Warriors now they are starting to point the finger at Kuming for his alleged role in the DNP series.

“During that span, sources said Cummings was asked to go on the court four times, but he declined three cleanup opportunities and sat out the Thunder’s Jan. 2 game with back pain after Kerr said he would get some minutes with Curry, Butler and Green,” ESPN’s Anthony Slater wrote.

“Members of the coaching staff and front office, team sources said, viewed that deactivation against the Thunder as an unofficial end, a sign that he had left the team.”

“Kuminga, sources say, felt they had already given up on him and saw the sudden request to go from ice-cold and rotten on the end of the bench to a nationally televised meeting with the defending champions as a recipe for embarrassment. He was sore from working with the weight and refused their latest request to be an emergency option.”

After coming off the bench for the first time this season and playing a season-low 12 minutes against the San Antonio Spurs on Nov. 12, Kuminga fell out of Kerr’s rotation completelyand did not see the floor again until November 29. After four straight games in which he averaged 7.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 19.3 minutes per game, Kuminga played just three more games with the Warriors over nearly two months.

It has been speculated for some time that the two sides will eventually part ways, as there was talk of trade and Kuminga, a restricted free agent, held out for months last offseason in hopes of landing an offer list or trade. Ultimately, despite thoughts that he might sign his qualifying offer to become an unrestricted free agent in 2026, he and the Warriors agreed to a two-year, $46.8 million extension on the first day of training camp. Just over four months later, Golden State traded Cummings, as well as Buddy Hield, to the Hawks for Kristaps Porzingis.

Kuminga, who has a bruised left knee, has yet to make his debut for Atlanta, but is expected to do so after the NBA All-Star break.
