Jonathan Cumminga Moses Moody made six 3-pointers on his way to 28 points, three rebounds, three assists and four blocks. But perhaps the most spectacular of all was rookie Will Richard, one of the cogs in the Florida Gators’ national title run last March. In his first career start, the second-round pick managed a game-high 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting, along with seven rebounds and three assists.

After the game, coach Steve Kerr expressed his pride that the young guys stepped up in the absence of a star core, but also .

The Warriors committed 18 turnovers, seven of which came in the third quarter when Sacramento blew them away for 32 points. Russell Westbrook also singled them out for a triple-double with 26 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists.

While the young guys shined in the narrow loss, Al Horford and the other veterans struggled to find a rhythm. Despite grabbing seven rebounds, Horford was held scoreless, shooting 0-of-7 from beyond the arc. The five failed to find it from distance and it cost the Warriors big chances. During the Kings’ 11-1 run in the fourth quarter to decide the game, Horford missed three open and makeable 3-pointers.

Other things decided the Warriors’ fate – turnovers, bad fouls, offensive rebounds and inconsistent free throws easily explain the loss. But Horford has looked out of rhythm since his strong first week, and given the Warriors’ protocol of resting him at one end of each straight, it has been difficult for him to re-establish himself. Kerr talked about Horford’s recent struggles and how he can help the vet get back on track.

The Warriors lost their third game in the past four, so there’s only so much positivity that can come from a loss like this one.

But origin Will Richard and offensive rebounding by Moses Moody are encouraging signs of improvement. Richard gives the Warriors another option in the backcourt given how intuitively he understands the system. And a shot at Moody, after missing the start of the season with a minor calf strain, could see him back in the starting lineup as Kerr rotates that group depending on the matchup.
