On Tuesday’s packed schedule in college basketball, this is not a game that will attract college basketball fans, as they will be watching what are expected to be closer games in the Big Ten and SEC. You can see the point spread for yourself below. Duke is expected to destroy Miami in a meeting of teams on opposite ends of the spectrum.
What’s crazy and amazing about this matchup and the circumstances surrounding it — with Duke being a monster favorite and Miami being seen as a team with absolutely no chance to win — is that two years ago these programs were in completely different places. Miami made it to the Final Four under then-coach Jim Larranaga. Duke was a solid team, but nowhere near the nation’s elite. The Blue Devils couldn’t even reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in 2023. One would think Miami would continue to be a major national player in ACC basketball. Larranaga did the unthinkable by leading Miami to the Final Four for the first time in school history. Larranaga’s ability to lead the U’s to the big show rivaled what he did at George Mason in 2006. The Hurricanes looked like a fledgling program under a coach who took them to the top of the mountain and seemed like one of the best players in the country. to play for.
Somehow, someway, everything went south for Miami last season, and things only got worse early this season. It all quickly came crashing down on Larranaga, who wearily retired as Miami’s head coach, lamenting the rapidly changing world of the NIL and transfer portals. People have correctly noted that Miami is willing to make big investments in player acquisitions. The Hurricanes are not in the poorhouse when it comes to making roster improvements. However, Larranaga quickly lost control of his program, and as a result, an illustrious coaching career came to an abrupt end. It’s not something most people would have expected when Miami played UConn in the national semifinals two years ago in early April.
It’s no surprise that Duke is good. The Blue Devils have Cooper Flagg, the consensus No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA draft if he (as expected) decides to be a one-and-done player. However, Kon Knuepel is an important newcomer to Duke’s roster, and there are other pieces of the puzzle for coach Jon Scheier to work with. Duke is very much in the running for the top seed and is the clear favorite to win the ACC this season. The Blue Devils need to make sure they develop as the season goes on, and not coast along despite the fact that their conference isn’t particularly tough.
