The Heat’s Erik Spoelstra is downplaying the drama ahead of Jimmy Butler’s return
As it is Miami Heat vs Denver Nuggets on Friday night, will mark the return of the star Jimmy Butler after a seven-game suspension. How Butler was supposed to start in his first game back, head coach Erik Spoelstra talked about the 35-year-old star’s comeback and went out of his way to express how he wants to calm all the drama.
Erik Spoelstra says the Heat are in an “unusual place” amid Jimmy Butler’s drama

Spoelstra didn’t answer any questions about Butler during the last trip, but he began his pregame press conference Friday with an opening statement. He would say that the team in a “League of Complexity” and even confirmed that Butler would be in the starting lineup without once saying his name.
“We’re operating in a league of complexity, we’re in an unusual place right now, but really, everything that is is complex, and we fully plan to work within that complexity,” Spoelstra said. “So my job is to prepare this team, to prepare them to play at a high level, and that’s what I’m doing. That’s the plan. My methods for doing so are really none of your business. Okay, you’re all looking for drama. I am looking to prepare this team to play at a high level. And I’ll even give you our starting lineup. All right, starting lineup, I’m checking a lot of boxes, so you don’t have to ask me a lot of questions.”
“The starting lineup will be the same lineup we had the last time you saw us in this building, the game before that,” Spoelstra continued. “It was not one of our better games. So we want to make up for it. And then in terms of silly questions about what’s the temperature in the room or how is everyone feeling, it sounds so dramatic. We are professionals, we are fine. We are ready for tonight’s game. That’s the only thing that matters. So that’s basically it. We can’t wait to get back to the tree. We have been on the road for some time and we are complete, ready to get a tip on this matter.”
Erik Spoelstra: Jimmy Butler in starting lineup gives Heat ‘best chance’
The starting lineup Spoelstra is referring to is the one on the infamous night of Jan. 2 when fans last saw the Heat star play in a game the team lost to the Indiana Pacers. Butler would say after that game that he had lost his “joy” playing basketball and said “probably not” when asked if he could bring that back to Miami.

There’s been a tremendous amount of detail being reported that shows the fractured relationship between the Heat and Butler, and some have questions about whether the team wants to bring back that chaos. However, Butler is back with the team as he said in a statement on Friday and in the starting lineup as Spoelstra reduces the risk.
“Sure,” Spoelstra said when asked if there could be effective plays tonight still with the “complexity” of the Butler situation. “If I didn’t believe that, you know, I wouldn’t be here right now, or in this position that I’m in.”
A starting lineup of Butler, Tyler Hero, Bam Adebayo, Duncan Robinson and Haywood Highsmith gives Miami “best chance” that they beat their opponents in the 2023 NBA Finals, as Spoelstra said.
“The lineup I’m going with tonight is because I think it gives us the best chance tonight,” Spoelstra said.
Either way, there’s no doubt that Friday should be an interesting night for both the fans and the Heat as they welcome back Butler, who has requested a trade from the team.
