Jimmy Butler-Heat situation ‘not fixable’ despite return

Butler spoke to the media after the game and expressed that he was not surprised to be back in the starting lineup given everything that has happened in the past two weeks.

Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra was open about his team’s performance, stressing that he would not engage in any talk about Butler.

Butler’s history of getting out of situations he doesn’t like

Butler has a history of deftly maneuvering his way out of situations that don’t interest him, often setting the stage for future moves. He’s somewhat of a pioneer in this regard, influencing other notable moves, such as an overweight James Harden showing up to Rockets camp to force a trade.

In 2018, when Butler was looking to leave Minnesota, he famously dominated practice against starters including Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins while playing with a team of third-string players. Not only did he win easily, but he talked a lot of trash throughout the session.

Butler has dealt with tougher situations than the current one with the Heat, and in many ways that’s not surprising. In previous instances, as with the Timberwolves, he called out the softness of players like KAT and Wiggins, and even with Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, his criticism seemed justified.

The Heat are one of the few teams that could manage Butler for as long as they did, but the relationship eventually had to fizzle out. The team was probably hesitant to offer him a $100 million extension over the season until he was 38, especially considering his future earnings and the direction they wanted to go.

Wherever Jimmy Butler ends up landing, the next inevitable question will be how long the honeymoon phase will last. Maybe a year? It is reasonable to expect that he will not remain in a comfortable situation for long.
