Tony Parker gives a personal update on Spurs’ Gregg Popovich ahead of the Paris Games



The San Antonio Spurs are in Paris for two games on January 23 and 25 against the Indiana Pacers. A franchise legend Tony Parker attends in his homeland and gave a promising update on the main coach Gregg Popovich, who is still recovering from a stroke he died in November.

“Yes, of course, I have news from Pop. He’s doing well. He is definitely disappointed that he missed the trip to Paris. He was here this summer during the Olympics and was excited to be back. But for now, his health is a priority and he is doing well, which is good news for the future.

Coach Pop has been out of the Spurs side for most of the campaign. Still, acting HC Mitch Johnson has done a respectable job, leading San Antonio to a 19-22 start. They are currently out of the playback image. Chris Paul also revealed on Wednesday that Popovich regularly calls him after games to check in and give CP3 advice on what the team can do better.

While there’s no timetable for Pop’s return, CEO RC Buford also said the legendary boss is it works well in rehab, via ESPN:

“All I can share is that he’s attacking his rehab in a way that … you know Dad, you’ve watched him for years,” Buford, one of Popovich’s closest associates, said Wednesday. “The same resilience he’s shown throughout our coaching career, he’s approaching his rehab comeback in an incredibly unique way.” The relationships he had with our former players and the care they share with him is incredible. Parker played 17 seasons for the Spurs, making six All-Star teams and helping the franchise win four NBA titles alongside coach Pop and Tim Duncan. He remains close to his former leader and signed autographs at a meeting in Paris on Wednesday.
