European wheelchair basketball: Great Britain men and women win silver
Great Britain finished second in the men’s and women’s competition at the European Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Sarajevo.
The men were aiming for a record ninth European Championship title but were beaten 72-69 by Spain in Saturday’s final.
It came a day after Great Britain’s women’s team fell to a 66-59 defeat at the hands of the Netherlands, who won their fifth title in a row.
Gregg Warburton top scored for the men with 18 points but trailed for much of the game against a young Spanish side looking to win their first European crown.
GB trailed by 12 points after the first quarter but slowly chipped away to eventually take the lead for the first time in the game with just over seven minutes to play.
But they couldn’t shake off the Spaniards, who pulled away again with a minute to go and this time held on to their lead, although Great Britain’s Kyle Marsh missed a three-pointer attempt at the buzzer that would have tied the game.
It was heartache again for the Great Britain women on Friday as they fell to a fourth successive defeat in the European final against the Dutch – who retained their Paralympic title in Paris last year.
Lucy Robinson led Team Britain with 22 points, while Robin Love also reached double figures with 10 points and led the team in rebounds with nine.
By reaching the final, both British teams secured qualification for next year’s World Cup in Ottawa, Canada.
