NBA admits it missed Kevin Durant’s technical foul against Thunder in L2M report

After securing the rebound, Durant (HOU) calls a timeout, according to the report. But officials don’t see it that way. If awarded, a technical foul would be assessed to HOU for an excessive timeout.

It marred the star’s first game with a new team since Durant signed a two-year deal with the Rockets. In particular, she gave Durant a Chris Webber moment, as the former star gained notoriety for calling a timeout with none left.

The gaffe also left plenty of controversy in what had been an up-and-coming Rockets-Thunder battle. At the time of the incident, the game was tied with two seconds left. Had the officials seen the foul, they would have awarded the Thunder a free throw with a technical foul. But officials did not see Durant timeoutand the Rockets tried to win the game in the second overtime.

Fans weren’t buying it, and many on social media reacted to the mistake. ClkutchPoints National NBA Insider Brett Siegel reiterated what happened, indicating that it was simply a matter of the refs not seeing the timeout.

“The NBA said in the L2M report that Kevin Durant called a timeout last night at the end of the first overtime in OKC, but the officials didn’t see it,” Siegel wrote. “This was deemed an incorrect call and should have been assessed as a technical foul.”

The Rockets were unable to capitalize on the mistake, falling to the Thunder 125-124 in the second overtime. Regardless, it was an eye-opening question to start the season, and something the NBA could monitor going forward. The Rockets will have a few days to recover from this overtime marathon as they open against the Detroit Pistons on Friday.
