The NCAA allows college athletes to bet on professional sports as of November 1st

The NCAA approved a rule change Wednesday that will allow athletes and athletic department personnel to bet on professional sports.

Two weeks after the Division I cabinet approved the change, the governing councils of Divisions II and III signed off on it, allowing the new rule to take effect Nov. 1.

This does not change the NCAA rule that prohibits athletes from betting on college sports. The NCAA also prohibits sharing information about college contests with bookies. The institution also does not accept advertising or sponsorship of the NCAA Championship through betting sites.

Despite the change, the NCAA emphasized that it does not support sports betting, especially for student athletes.

NCAA President Charlie Baker expected the rule change to be adopted when he spoke to the media on Monday at the Great East round table about the future college basketball.

“This change recognizes the realities of today’s sports environment without compromising our commitment to protecting the integrity of college competition or the well-being of student-athletes,” said Roberta Page, Slippery Rock director of athletics and chair of the Division II Governing Council.

The change comes as the number of NCAA enforcement cases involving sports betting violations has increased in recent years. last month, The NCAA has banned three men’s college basketball players for sports bettingsaying they bet their games on Fresno State and San Jose State and they could share thousands of dollars in payouts.

“We run the largest integrity program in the world for sports betting across all different games,” Baker said Monday. “Unfortunately, we have discovered some student athletes involved in some problematic activities.”
