The Blazers take their frustration out on the Warriors
After the game against Denver the day before, Stephen Curry (35 points) fireside meeting begins. He scored 16 points, 4/6 from 3-point range, in the first nine minutes to lead Golden State (25-17). Entrance to Jerami Grant (22 points) changes the situation and Portland returns to the tie at the end of the quarter (28-28).
The Blazers continue their momentum behind a cheeky address from the outside. Danny Avdija (26 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds) and Mathis Thiboul scored from a distance and Portland went to +6. With Stephen Curry on the bench, Jonathan Cumminga (16 points, 8 rebounds) brought back the Warriors (51-51) thanks to a foul dunk on the head of Donovan Klingon (14 points, 8 rebounds). The end of the half, however, is in favor of the Blazers. Jerami Grant, Sheddon Sharp and Danny Avdia score a sharp 18-5 to the delight of Moda Center (69-56).
If Stephen Curry continues his festival, the Warriors defense on the other hand is absent. The Blazers attack the circle in abundance, Toumani Kamara sets the sights, and Thiago Splitter’s men punish every opponent’s loose ball and move to +18 (101-83).
Steve Kerr then tried to make a last stand by starting the final period with Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler (14 points) and Draymond Green (12 points, 5 turnovers), but nothing worked. Golden State committed 21 turnovers in 40 minutes to its first loss of the season, while Portland earned its first win in relief of a franchise still reeling from the arrest of Chauncey Billups by the FBI.
WHAT TO REMEMBER
– Blazers defense and collective brilliance. Eight players with 10 or more points, 47% 3-point shooting and 30 assists. The Blazers presented their basketball. From Jrue Holiday’s 11 assists to the aggressiveness of the Kamara-Avidja-Grant trio, Portland made short work of the Warriors. Their defense also caused 25 turnovers while holding Golden State to 43% shooting.
– Tiago Splitter’s first victory as an NBA coach. The former coach of Paris Basket had no idea that his return to the other side of the Atlantic would lead him to the position of head coach of the Blazers during the second game of the season. Recruited by Chauncey Billups as an assistant, the Brazilian was able to rally his troops after 24 hours that were as unique as they were traumatic for the Blazers. Facing the Warriors back-to-back, Thiago Splitter’s players were the aggressors on both ends of the court to create a hole before the break and cruise to an easy victory.
– Stephen Curry, fresh as a cockroach. At 37 years old and after a Dante-esque performance the day before, Stephen Curry was the ultimate warrior. While all of his teammates lacked strength and focus, the two-time MVP scored 35 points in 27 minutes on over 50% shooting.
