“It was weird, honestly. You never see that in an NBA game. It’s more than the stuff you see in European football, right?” Kenny Atkinson summed up everyone’s feelings after the incident that occurred midway through the 4th quarter of the game between the Nets and Cavaliers.
As the referees had just called a foul on the Cavaliers offense, a spectator dressed in a purple hoodie appeared on the court, running directly towards Donovan Mitchell. When the individual tried to take a photo with his phone, four security agents tackled him to the ground and removed him.
“I took a few steps back and then replanted my feet, ready to do whatever it took. The Cleveland guard says. “The kid wanted a selfie. I know he’ll probably spend some time in jail, but when he gets out he’ll probably have a great selfie. Sorry, I don’t think that’s funny…”
Mitchell was particularly annoyed by the script of the match
Like Mitchell, everyone on the field was surprised by this intrusion. “At first I was confused and I saw a guy running towards Don, so I stepped towards him”testified by Jarrett Allen. “But the security at the Barclays Center is great. Good for them. They did a great job. When he left the court, his feet didn’t even touch the ground. They literally carried him out of the room.”
What particularly upset Mitchell was that the Cavaliers let a 20-point lead slip away and were mostly focused on this unacceptable letdown. “Honestly, I can’t say it affected me.”Mitchell confided. “I was especially upset that we squandered the lead. It was just, ‘Okay, it happened,’ and let’s move on. I was focused on the game, and then I saw someone running, so I didn’t have time to take it all in. I’m glad they handled the situation well. The security did their job.”
