Can the Heat get their draft pick back for Terry Rozier?
As long as Terry Rozier he was not convicted in connection with the suspicious betting affair that led to his arrest by the FBI, he will still receive his salary. So, even if the NBA fired him, he’ll continue to pay back $26.6 million from his last year’s salary…
For Miami, therefore, it is a double punishment, especially as the Miami Herald explains that the Florida club was never warned that the point guard/guard was the focus of an NBA and FBI investigation.
However, it was ten months before his transfer to Florida that the acts Terry Rozier is accused of took place. According to the government agency, “Terrible Terry” explained to a childhood friend that he would pretend to be injured during the match with Charlotte, information that the relative then allegedly sold to a group of bookies.
Quickly, faced with staggering bets on the player, bookies blocked bets and the NBA was alerted. Then she launched an investigation… at full discretion.
One less argument in future exchanges?
On Miami’s part, we assure you that we were never informed, when the Terry Rozier trade was being negotiated, that he was accused of interfering with his performances, and therefore could potentially be suspended, or even kicked out of the league. As for the Hornets, they don’t want to talk about what they knew.
As of now, the Heat are exploring their options, even if the situation is rather unprecedented. Can Pat Riley’s club get back the first-round draft pick sent to the Hornets in the trade, and who should join Charlotte in 2027 if Miami misses the playoffs next season, or 2028 otherwise? It’s hard to say, especially since a lot has changed and in North Carolina, the GM responsible for the trade, Mitch Kupchak, has left his post.
But this draft pick promised to Charlotte also limits Miami in negotiations (Giannis Antetokounmpo?) as they potentially only have two tradeable first-round picks (2030 and 2032), while they could have four (2026, 2028, 2030 and 2032) if they were to make the…
