Victor Vembanjama in his 31, Spurs suppress the Nets

Victor Wembanyama (Spurs) against the Nets

And three wins for Spurs ! But this was much more difficult than imagined against the lowly Nets. San Antonio finally came out with a 118-107 success, hijacked at the end of the match.

The Nets got off to the best start with a lot of pressure and four turnovers in less than three minutes for the Spurs. San Antonio reacts collectively raising the tone in defense and two quick counters from Victor Vembanyama. More in rhythm, the Texans find the skill on a 3-pointer to take the lead (18-16). Dylan Harper until construction and Keldon Johnson in the end, they do the Spurs the greatest good, when Brooklyn no longer finds a solution without him Cam Thomas or Michael Porter Jr on the floor. The home team ended the first quarter with a 24-9 lead and led 31-24.

However, Vembanjama has yet to score a single field goal in the game, which was done at the start of the second quarter. Porter Jr. from afar allows Brooklyn not to sink too quickly. Without forcing, the home side increase the gap by accelerating the game whenever they can, with Harper in many good shots.

Up until then rather discreet, Wembanyama took charge to outscore the Nets with 13 points in the final five minutes of the second quarter. Just to drive home the point a little further, “Wemby” marks the night’s action by stringing together two counterattacks in a matter of seconds and then launching a banderilla from the logo’s first intent. The home team returns to the locker room with the biggest advantage of the first period (69-48) and the wind at their backs.

From +26 to -5 for Spurs

The rest isn’t cooling Victor Vembanyama, the first-possession dunk, or the Spurs. Mitch Johnson’s players are skilled from long range thanks to good choices. Even chess turns into dunking Stephen Castle. The gap climbs to 26 units and everything then seems to be heading for a very quiet evening at the Frost Bank Centre. Except that the exit of Vembanyama and the sudden absence of shooting and dynamics completely changes the side. Thomas continues his offensive solo performance and the Nets go 21-3 out of nowhere (from 81-55 to 84-76).

San Antonio’s outside defense leaves something to be desired, and Brooklyn plays well on the other end of the floor by pestering Vembanyama with constant two-handed possession. Without creation and without defense, Spurs no longer exist at all. Quite the opposite for the Nets, who scored five consecutive long-range baskets and took the lead at the start of the fourth quarter (89-90)!

In tough conditions, San Antonio relies on the incredible Dylan Harper. No. 2 in the last draft shows all his technique in penetration and carries the Spurs in attack. His duel with Cam Thomas (40 points) is magnificent and offers a breathtaking end to the match. Close to collapse, the locals make a difference with their strong men, the weight of Vembanyama, the activity of Johnson and the talent Devin Vassell who cut down a rebound to give his team an eight-point lead with less than a minute left. Vembanjama ends the spectacle along the alley as it goes on and Spurs escape after a real scare.

WHAT TO REMEMBER

– Victor Vembanyama close to “5×5” and it is very important. The French center was less impressive offensively against the Nets, who tried to shut him out of the game as much as possible. But “Wemby” was able to contribute everywhere in the game with 31 points (on 9/21), 14 rebounds, 6 blocks, 4 assists and 3 steals. San Antonio, however, will have to learn some lessons from a sluggish offensive pass without the Habs on the court.

– Spurs X-factor Dylan Harper. For his first match at home, Harper was very good. If the Spurs end up with a third win, they can thank the maturity of the game and the intelligence in his choices (20 points on 8/11, 8 assists, 6 rebounds). Novak played as if he already had years of experience behind him. While waiting for the return of De’Aaron Fox, San Antonio could already look forward to its new element, after only three games in the NBA.

– The Nets were not unworthy. We thought Brooklyn had already resigned in the third quarter when the visitors were behind by 26 points. But Jordi Fernandez’s players showed great mental strength not to give up and try everything by leaving the racket. A three-point address followed and offered real opposition to San Antonio. With a game like this, Brooklyn will offer some moments to its fans this season.
