The Warriors are still comfortable against the Clippers in the run
On the trail of the duo Stephen Curry – Draymond Green, les Warriors they play their game during the first minutes (14-7). If Nicolas Batum marks his entry with a three-pointer, Clippers they are very lacking in skill.
In contrast, two award-winning shots by Quinten Post (12 points) and a Jonathan Cumminga aggressively increases the deficit to +15 (27-12). Eight points in a row by James Harden (20 points, shooting 6/15) allows the Clippers to respond with 13-3, but the shot of Brandin Podziemski (12 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) revives Golden State (33-25).
“Podz” continues with a counter on Chris Paul, followed by a layup, but the difference in skill from the outside (8/18 for Golden State, 2/15 for Los Angeles) puts the Clippers back on the ropes (40-25).
This time, Kawhi Leonard (18 points, 7/17 on shots) wakes up his troops. He in turn scored eight points in a row to cut the deficit in half. The pair of James Harden – Ivica Zubac followed their example and the winning shot from the first lead ended with a score of 24-6, which gave the Clippers an advantage at the break (49-46).
Coming back from the locker room, the Warriors’ defense is making a noise and Stephen Curry (19 points, 8 assists) is taking control. In six minutes, he scored 7 points, registered 3 assists and led 17-6 during the first six minutes of the third quarter (63-57). Ivica Zubac (14 points, 13 rebounds) tries to stabilize the deficit, but Golden State scores a point. Jimmy Butler (21 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists) takes over Stephen Curry and the Warriors start the last quarter with a 15-point lead (78-63).
Just like at the beginning of the second quarter, the Warriors let their guard down. Kawhi Leonard immediately rushes to the breakthrough, but two triples by Quinten Post and Moses Moody start a 10-2 that brings the Clippers to -20 (90-70). Golden State therefore confirms a good start to the season with four wins in five games before playing 10 of the next 12 away games. The Clippers are still in training.
WHAT TO REMEMBER
– La double lame Curry – Butler. Just like against Memphis the day before, we had to wait until the third quarter to see the Warriors take control of the game. Their two stars did the job. Stephen Curry started the hostilities with a combination of points and distribution to move Golden State from -3 to +7. Jimmy Butler once accompanied Curry on the bench, scored 10 points and increased the deficit to +15. Between them, they scored 19 of their team’s 32 points in the period to put the Clippers out of danger.
– Nothingness behind the trio of James Harden – Kawhi Leonard – Ivica Zubac. During the first half, James Harden and Kawhi Leonard had more field goals (10) than other teammates (8). If Ivica Zubac showed up in the third quarter, the Clippers’ offense had a lot of trouble finding its rhythm against Golden State’s aggressive defense. Ty Lue’s men finished the match with 36% shooting, including 18% from 3-pointers and only 10 assists!
– The defensive transition of the Clippers suffered. During preseason training camp, Jeff Van Gundy, Ty Lue’s assistant in charge of the defense, put together shirts to emphasize the importance of getting back on defense. The Clippers’ deficiencies in this area hurt them badly in the first round of the playoffs against Denver. But the message still hasn’t arrived. The Warriors scored 17 points in transition against a defense that lacked intensity and toughness. This is an area where the Clippers will need to improve quickly.
