Under pressure, NBA seeks balance with sports betting
Shaken by the FBI’s investigation into questionable betting involving Terry Rozier and Chauncey Billups, NBA is forced to take action. According to ESPNthe league and its partners, including FanDuel and DraftKings, are examining the types of bets deemed most likely to be rigged, as well as the maximum amounts that can be approved.
Even before the start of the season, the NBA asked its partners to no longer offer bets on fouls, turnovers or missed free throws, which are considered too easy to fake. FanDuel etc DraftKings confirmed that they have complied with this request.
The decision comes in a tense context as federal authorities investigate several cases of illegal betting involving major league players. Terry Rozier was therefore accused of informing a childhood friend that he would fake an injury in March 2023, allowing bookies to bet on his poor performance. More than $250,000 would be wagered this way before the meeting…
Betting sites assure ‘regulated industry working as it should’
This new scandal is an echo of the affair Jontai Porterbanned for life last April for manipulating his performances to help players. Following the scandal, the NBA also asked bookmakers to no longer offer bets on players on “two-way” contracts or those signed for ten days.
But betting sites are defending the system. DraftKings even believes these polls prove it “regulated industry works as intended”while FanDuel advertises its own “constant cooperation” with the league.
It must be said that individual performance betting remains a pillar of the NBA sports betting market and is very popular, especially in combination betting. But their stricter supervision seems inevitable, while the NBA has to preserve its image after these scandals. Even if on the side of the lobby of betting sites, we retort that too strict regulations would push bettors towards illegal and unregulated platforms.
