The NBA could see a big improvement with the latest move in refereeing technology
NBA fans have been looking for a solution for a long time drawn-out rerun reviewsand the league is set to implement technological innovation who could answer their requests.
“Beginning with tomorrow’s games, NBA referees will use headsets to communicate in real-time with the NBA Replay Center and with each other,” NBA communications account X announced Friday. “The new communication system is designed to improve the flow of the game and improve the accuracy of officiating.”
It takes a few minutes for officials to discuss a key possession or foul, reducing the momentum of the game as well as fan interest. If this system is successful, people would stay engaged and less likely to flip the channel. Unfortunately, the NBA doesn’t currently command the level of confidence usually required to enact such a plan.
After a high-profile FBI investigation into a scandal against illegal gamblingthat includes Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and former player and assistant Damon Jones, the idea of referees having direct communication with Secaucus, New Jersey will upset some people. The masses crave transparency, especially when the integrity of the game is in question.
However, officials will resent the implication of requiring their conversations with the replay center to be recorded. After all, none of the FBI’s latest indictments were named. They will claim it Tim Donaghy days are finished. While fans obviously want lucidity when it comes to reviews, perhaps this development will lead to a more fluid and presentable product.
Patience is pretty thin in modern society, so an efficient and accurate method of viewing replays would probably do well with the NBA’s younger audience. Viewers will certainly not hesitate to share their opinion.
