Draymond Green believes Ja Morant’s poor play is a ‘silent protest’

recently, Memphis Grizzlies guard I Morant was suspended for one game after making comments criticizing the team’s coaching staff following their home loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Morant looked relieved during that game, as he has for much of this season so far, but he was in no mood to take responsibility in his postgame press conference.

Recently, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, who moved with Morant and the Grizzlies last week and beat them, spoke about his thoughts on what Morant’s game is like reflecting his attitude.

“When we got on that plane, I was saying to Steph, ‘Man, I’m not on it at all. Like, it looked like something happened…’ And Steph’s like, ‘Huh, there’s a silent protest going on, huh?’ And I was like, ‘That’s what it looks like,'” Green said, on The Draymond Green Show on X, formerly Twitter. “And then obviously after the game we saw the comments, and I thought, ‘Yeah. And rightfully so. Something was happening. And when you see this, it takes you into a space of, ‘Is this the beginning of the end?’

Tough times for the Grizzlies

At this point, it’s unclear exactly what Morant will be protesting, as the team fired head coach Taylor Jenkins, with whom Morant reportedly had some disagreements, last season and implemented an offensive system much more suited to his limited skill set.

However, the Grizzlies have stumbled out of the gates this year, and as Green mentioned, Morant hasn’t been particularly engaged on both ends of the floor to open the campaign (although it should be noted that he did hit a game-winner against the Phoenix Suns recently).

Either way, now that his suspension has been served, it remains to be seen how Morant will react when he returns to the lineup for the Grizzlies’ next game. That will happen Monday night at home against the Detroit Pistons at 8:00 PM ET.
