Why Adam Silver Missed a Congressional Committee Meeting

The The NBA had a meeting with the Congressional Committee on the trail FBI indictment against Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozierand Damon Jones. During the meeting there were important people absent, on which the trustee is included Adam Silveraccording to Mark Stein.
“Neither Adam Silver nor Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum were present today, the source said Stein’s lineat a Congressional committee meeting with the NBA prompted by the recent indictments of Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozier and Damon Jones,” Stein wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Instead, the league’s lawyers and a gambling consultant answered the lawyer’s questions and congressional aides to the US House Committee on Energy and Commerce. The meeting lasted less than an hour, according to Joe Vardon of The Athletic.
“The House sought details of fraudulent, illegal and alleged betting practices involving NBA players, coaches and officials, including the actions of NBA players and coaches identified in the recent indictment; as well as prior cases,” Vardon wrote.
Billups was indicted for his alleged involvement in a broad, multi-year scheme to defraud poker players in 2019 when he was not a coach or player. Rozier is accused of allegedly intentionally taking himself out of the game in 2023 so an accomplice could bet and win.
As for Jones, he is accused of using his relationship with Los Angeles Lakers players to place bets. In 2023, Jones learned that LeBron James was not playing against the Milwaukee Bucks and told an unnamed conspirator to bet on the Bucks. Jones also did the same thing in 2024 when he learned from the coaches that the Lakers player was injured and that his minutes would be limited.
The two men identified in the charging documents as “Accomplice 1” and “Player 2” are former or current NBA players but have not yet been charged. Player 2 was a starter for the Orlando Magic in 2023.
