JJ Redick slams LA for lack of fight against short Hawks

JJ Redick he was not satisfied with Los Angeles The performance of the Lakers after the loss with 122-102 against the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night.

Los Angeles is off to a great start to the season, going 7-2 in the matchup. Redick has been adamant about wanting a consistent level of play from his team, understanding the importance of a good performance throughout the season.

However, the Hawks had other plans throughout the contest. Atlanta poured in 37 points in the first quarter, setting the tone for their offense throughout the night. They did this despite missing Trae Young and Kristaps Porzingis, among others.

Redick reflected in the loss after the game, via Fullcourtpass. His time in the post-match press conference didn’t last long as his answers were short and expressions showing frustration with his team’s performance.

“Is there anything special about how the game just started and you couldn’t get going as a team?” one reporter asked.

“He doesn’t really like it much tonight,” Redick said.

“You mentioned the obvious, didn’t you? You’re going to point out that sometimes, when other teams are down, they find a way to rally around the flag. Do you feel some of that from the Hawks? Or do you think this is more your problem?” another journalist was asked.

“They brought the required level of effort, urgency and physicality,” Redick replied.

How JJ Redick handled the Lakers against the Hawks

JJ Redick is right to be very critical of the Lakers’ poor play against the Hawks. Even though he was on the road, that still doesn’t excuse them being ineffective on the defensive side of the ball.

Los Angeles fell behind early, trailing 37-29 after the first quarter. He went up to 14 points at halftime and then 26 after the third quarter, proving it wasn’t the Lakers’ night.

Perimeter shooting, ball movement and turnovers made the difference in this matchup. The Hawks won in all three categories, making 16 3-pointers, dishing out 37 assists and limiting their turnovers to just 11. The opposite was true for the Lakers, who made 12 3-pointers and had 23 assists, but committed 20 turnovers.

Five players scored in double figures for Los Angeles. Luka Dončić led the way with 22 points, 11 assists, five rebounds and a steal. He shot 7 of 17 from the field, including 4 of 10 from beyond the arc and 4 of 6 from the free throw line. Next is Dalton Knecht with 14 points and four rebounds, Jake Laravia 13 points and five rebounds, Jared Vanderbilt 12 points and 18 rebounds, and Deandre Ayton 11 points and five rebounds.

The Lakers will look to bounce back in their next game, staying on the road. They face the Charlotte Hornets on November 10th at 7pm ET.
