Stephen Curry finally picked up his first foul of the ’17 season

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry not exactly what one would consider a caustic. He can play physical and can get down and dirty when it comes to it, but he prefers to play with finesse and flair. It has Draymond Green anyway to take care of the bruising aspect of the game. It’s no coincidence that Curry hasn’t been whistled for a flagrant foul in his entire 17-year career up to this point.

But as the old saying goes, there is always a first time for everything. On Tuesday night, as the Warriors faced the all-powerful Oklahoma City Thunder, Curry was called for the first flagrant foul of his career for interfering with Landing space for Isaiah Joe on a three-point attempt near the end of the first quarter.

Of course, Curry isn’t a dirty player, so his intent on this play wasn’t to disrupt Joe’s landing space. This was simply an accident of being in the wrong place at the right time, and as a result, the Warriors bled three points from the foul line on a flagrant call, and the Thunder retained possession.

This unfortunate flagrant foul on Curry seemed to set the tone for the Warriors’ night on the road against the reigning champion Thunder. They cut the lead to six on a 3-pointer by Moses Moody to start the second period, but that only set off an OKC avalanche — with the Thunder up 19 at halftime and the Dubs unable to recover.

A game against the reigning champion Thunder is always going to be a good litmus test for any team with championship aspirations. Even without Jaylen Williams, the Thunder were the best team in the league, losing just one of their first 11 games. But then the Warriors were taunted at the Pike Center on Tuesday night, as only a late surge by the Dubs kept their final deficit from reaching 30-plus points.

However, there is not much rest for these weary Warriors. They will face another Western Conference team on the rise in the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night for the second straight matchup.
