Stephon Castle claims defense about connection to Wemby

Stephen Castle and Victor Vembanyama have developed a special defense partnership for San Antonio Spurs. The reigning Rookie of the Year was a key part strong start to the seasonand he recently opened up about what affects their two-way relationship.
Castle shared his defense bond thoughts shares with Vembanyama.
“We both pride ourselves on being two-way players,” Castle said, via Michael C. Wright from ESPN. “Our identity on this team is defense, and I feel like we’re the leaders of that. So how many pick-and-rolls we guard together, how many times we have to read each other, how much I have to help him rebound, just all those little things on that side of the floor just make it that much more important to us as a team.”
The The duo made franchise history against the Golden State Warriors when both recorded a triple-double in the same game. Castle finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, while Wembanyama had 31 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists in the 125-120 loss.
Castle started the season strong, averaging around 18 points, six rebounds and eight assists in the first 10 games. His defensive versatility at 2-3 pairs naturally with Vembaniam’s protection and rim length.
The second-year guard previously admitted he needs to improve his off-ball defense despite praise for his on-ball work. That self-awareness has helped him develop alongside Wembanyama, whose 96-game block continues to anchor Spurs’ defensive schemes.
Their partnership goes beyond individual statistics. Castle’s ability to initiate the offense and attack downhill creates spacing that Vembanyami uses, while the 7-foot-4 center’s defensive presence allows Castle to roam more freely on that end.
The Spurs have built their identity around defense this season, and Castle recognizes the responsibility that comes with being the foundation. His comments highlight a mature understanding of how small details like communication and rejection create winning habits.
Despite the historic performance, Castle and Vembanjama wanted victory more rather than an individual milestone, showing their team mentality continues to lead San Antonio’s young core.
