Karl-Anthony Towns and Landry Shamet hotter than the heat!
The evening didn’t promise to be under the best cover in the Madison Square Garden den for Miami’s welcome (bereft of the Hero-Adebayo duo), between Jalen Brunson missing for the first time this season (ankle) and OG Anunoby exiting after five minutes with a thigh injury.
As a leader, Karl-Anthony Towns put his team on his shoulders early in the game and the rest followed! Upon arrival, KAT scored 39 points and could count on the invaluable contribution of Landry Shamet, the author of 25 of his 36 points after the break to sweep the Heat from the start of the fourth quarter.
Despite Miami’s strong start, KAT quickly gained confidence by hitting his first two 3-point shots, before going 2+1 to keep his team in touch. After 18 points in the first quarter alone, the New York interior was the great architect of the 11-2 victory over the home team, with three-pointers from the pair of Clarkson-Jabusela coming off the bench (43-37).
The pressure then switched sides and it was Miami who had to hang on to stay in the game after another New York 3-pointer by Mychal Bridges, Josh Hart, then Karl-Anthony Towns in quick succession, and finally Landry Shamet to make it 72-63.
Down -10 at halftime (78-68), the Floridians managed to keep the suspense alive until the end of the third quarter, led by Andrew Wiggins, Pele Larson and Norman Powell. The trio then had to face a relieved Landry Shamet to get Miami back to -2 thanks to Jaime Jaquez Jr.’s relay. and Simone Fontecchio (102-100).
New York was eventually able to pull away by going on a 10-0 run in the final act that was initiated by Jordan Clarkson’s 3-pointer and closed by Mikal Bridges, still from a distance (120-106). Norman Powell continued his exploits to finish with a season-high 38 points, but he found a red-hot Landry Shamet in front of him that allowed the Knicks to stay on course for the win.
WHAT TO REMEMBER
– Karl-Anthony Towns as the perfect leader. A completed contract for the New York interior, who at the start of the match was more than valuable to get his team going after a difficult start. He responded in big moments after that, like when his two 3-pointers in quick succession allowed New York to regain the lead just before halftime. Miami never regained the lead after that.
– Landry Shamet was hot! Karl-Anthony Towns’ start was impressive, but what about Landry Shamet’s second half! A walking firecracker who continued to light up MSG to finish 6/12 from distance, but most notably with 36 points on the clock, his new career high. In the absence of Jalen Brunson, then the release of OG Anunoby, the tickets were due. It was tonight when Shamet.
– Doubt hangs over OG Anunobi. A dunk in pure wing style and a quick exit due to injury, officially down to the hamstring. Another tough blow that won’t help the Knicks business, pending further tests to learn more about the condition of his injury.
