Clemson is led by veteran coach Dabo Swinneywhich has been on the program for more than a decade. Sweeney won a national championship at Clemson, but times have been tougher lately.

The Tigers made the College Football Playoff in 2024, but they won’t be back this year. Sweeney and his team have lost several disappointing games this year, including to Georgia Tech and Duke.

Sweeney has called for changes in the way games are officiated this season. The Clemson coach believes officials should be held more accountable for decisions made during games. His criticism sometimes got him into hot water.

After the loss to Duke, Sweeney fried ref.

“Some critical penalties,” Sweeney said after that game, according to ESPN. “I don’t even know what to say about the last call. You all saw it. It shouldn’t come down to that. We had a lot of chances to win the game, but that’s one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen in a game, ever, in my entire coaching career. Ever.”

Clemson football was fined $10,000 and the ACC issued a public reprimand for the comments.

“Swinney’s post-game comments regarding the officiating were in direct conflict with the ACC’s sportsmanship policy which states: ‘Public criticism of officials or public comments criticizing the officiating of certain contests is not in the best interest of intercollegiate athletics. Individuals associated with an athletic program, while engaged in an athletic program, may therefore not comment on other officials directly to the conference office,'” the ACC said in a statement.

Clemson’s next game is against Furman on Nov. 22.
