Spike Lee takes New York Knicks to the Vatican!
The Oscar-winning director and die-hard Knicks fan attended the event at the Vatican, where Pope Leo XIV invited creators around the world.
“When cinema is authentic, it not only comforts, but challenges,” said Pope Leo XIV. “It articulates the questions that live within us and sometimes even brings tears that we didn’t know we needed to express.”
The He Got Game director was prepared with a custom Knicks jersey for the religious reader while attending an event over the weekend.
“This is disrespectful because he’s from Chicago!!!” a fan commented on the Knicks jersey before the official Knicks account retorted“He went to Villanova.”
“The new Pope.” receives a gesture and bless Nova3,” another fan wrote, referring to Pope Leo XIV attending Villanova.
“And to think I couldn’t love either of them more than I already did. I was wrong,” the fan said of Pope Leo XIV.
Pope Leo XIV has openly stated that he is a Chicago White Sox fan. He went viral over the summer when he wore a White Sox hat.
“I read something about it,” White Sox manager Will Venable said in response Pope Leo XIV pulling on a hat. “Yeah, I mean, it’s great. I love the support. I need it.”

Pope Leo XIV was elected to the papacy in May 2025 and made history as the first American pope.
As most NBA fans know, Spike Lee has been a die-hard Knicks fan since attending games with his father in the 60s. He watched last year The Knicks advanced to the Eastern Conference Finalsfor the first time in 25 years.
