When Rick Carlisle takes too many timeouts…
In basketball jargon, we call this “doing Chris Weber.” From this mythical plot of ancient interior, in the 1993 NCAA finalsthis is what we call taking a timeout that we no longer have in stock. The referees then award a technical foul.
Also, when it happens, it’s often unintentional, it’s a mistake, an oversight. Except in Indiana this season. Against the Pistons, with his team trailing by 18 points with just 140 seconds left, Rick Carlisle asked for a time-out, to bring out his starters. He won, but with a technical foul.
And this is the coach’s third match in a row Pacers did this in the last quarter. He agrees to commit a technical foul to have this moment, because it doesn’t change the result. It is perhaps the strongest symbol, ahead of tolls or injuries, this disastrous start to the season 2025 finalists
“Sometimes I feel like we need to take a breather. Sometimes, and that was the case in this match, I wanted to make changes.”, is justified Rick Carlisle. “The guys weren’t at the scoreboard on time and the only way to change it is to take a timeout. And that’s just one point, which doesn’t matter, and it was worth resting the starters.”
With just one win in 13 losses, including eight in a row, Rick Carlisle and the Pacers – the worst team in the NBA to start the season – are actually no longer within a point…
