Dante Exum needs knee surgery, will miss the entire season

Dallas Mavericks guard Dante Ecum will miss the remainder of the 2025-26 NBA season, the team announced Thursday. Exum underwent knee surgery during the offseason, but continued to deal with complications. As a result, he did not play in the regular season this year. It has been determined that Ekum will need another operation and will miss the entire campaign as a result.

Ekum unfortunately endured injury problems over the years. He’s been a reliable guard when he’s been on the floor, but Dallas will have to rely on other guards amid his absence this season.

The 30-year-old last appeared in an NBA game during the 2024-25 season. However, Ekum was limited to 20 competitions played. He made his Mavs debut during the 2023-24 season – a year in which Dallas reached the NBA Finals. Exum made a big impact in 55 games, starting 17 and providing key guard depth behind Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic.

With Doncic now in LA and the Lakers and Irving currently injured, the Mavs point guard situation is questionable at best. They experimented with Cooper Flagg at point guard earlier in the season, but he has since returned to his natural power forward position. D’Angelo Russell and Brandon Williams have led the scoring, but Russell is wildly inconsistent and Williams is inexperienced.

Things have certainly changed over the past few years, but the Mavericks were hoping Ekum could bring some sort of stability to the point guard position. Now one has to wonder if Dallas will try to bring in another point guard with Ekuma this year.
