Should the Mavericks Consider Trading LaMelo Ball to the Hornets?

LaMelo Ball has been mentioned as a possible trade candidate in recent seasons amid the continued struggles of the Charlotte Hornets. The Dallas Mavericks they have serious question marks for a spy and can make sense as a landing spot for a guard. The ball trade rumors have surfaced recently due to a report by Kelly Ico of Yahoo Sports.

“Amid a rough 4-11 start, Hornets star guard LaMelo Ball is growing frustrated with the organization and is open to a trade, league sources say @YahooSports,” Iko wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Ball responded to the post with a single emoji, which apparently caused the report to be shut down.

Still, the Hornets are 4-11 overall and could choose to rebuild further by moving on from LaMelo and building around Brandon Miller and Kon Knuepel. There’s certainly a chance Ball remains in the Hornets’ long-term plans, especially if he’s truly happy in Charlotte. If Ike’s report is accurate — which is questionable at this point given Ball’s response — a trade could happen sooner rather than later.

If Ball becomes available, should the Mavs trade with the Hornets? Let’s look at both arguments.

Why a trade for LaMelo Ball doesn’t make sense for the Mavericks

The Mavericks aren’t playing any better than the Hornets right now. At 4-12, Dallas is 13th in the Western Conference standings.

In addition, the The Mavs are reportedly interested in at least listening to offers for Anthony Davis. Injury issues are already a concern for the Mavs, as AD is among the players battling injuries. Ball is extremely talented, but has dealt with numerous injury problems throughout his NBA career.

Trading for another injury-prone star after acquiring Davis last year could be defined as a head-scratching move. Of course, Ball is much younger than Davis and would be a player to build on for the future Cooper Flaggbut injuries and the Mavericks’ current lackluster performance could cause Dallas to hesitate before making a deal.

The move would also prove challenging from a financial standpoint.

Why the Mavs should consider this move

If the Mavericks can make things work financially, then there’s also an argument to be made for pursuing LaMelo Ball.

As mentioned above, Dallas’ point guard situation needs to be addressed. Since trading Luka Doncic, the Mavericks have dealt with uncertainty at the position. Kyrie Irving is currently recovering from ACL surgery, as revealed on Thursday Dante Exum will miss the entire 2025-26 NBA season due to a knee injury. Meanwhile, D’Angelo Russell is wildly inconsistent and Brandon Williams’ overall inexperience makes it difficult to fully trust him as a starter.

The ball is a proven star. His scoring and playmaking would immediately bolster one of the worst offenses in the league. The team has struggled to create for Flagg, but Ball is capable of setting up his teammates for quality looks. Flegg’s scoring numbers would likely increase if the Mavericks acquired Ball.

Of course, LaMelo will take a few questionable attempts. His talent is undeniable, however, and he could be the answer to help the Mavericks get back on track.
