Collin Gillespie calls the photo-finish game-winner over the Timberwolves
This The Phoenix Suns team continues to punch above its weightthanks in large part to the power of friendship and good vibes. Despite missing key guys like Grayson Allen and Jaylen Green, as well as Devin Booker and Dillon Brooks late in the game after fouls, the Suns somehow found a way to come out on top Friday night NBA Cup clash against the Minnesota Timberwolves — with unheralded point guard Colin Gillespie coming to Phoenix’s rescue.
The Suns were unlikely to win after the Timberwolves were able to come back and extend their lead to eight points with just over a minute left. But Phoenix persevered, and with 6.4 seconds left, Gillespie hit a long shot from close range over the outstretched arms of Donte DiVincenzo to give the Suns a 114-113 victory.
Gillespie managed to slow down, creating space by DiVincenzo allowing him to score the game winner. However, there is little time left on the clock. The Suns then decided to double Anthony Edwards in the backcourt, forcing the ball to Julius Randle. Randle then missed wide of the right side of the rim, giving Phoenix the win.

With the Timberwolves leading 113-105 with 1:09 remaining, the Suns came back with a series of defensive stops. Gillespie stole Edwards’ pass, which led to Jordan Goodwin’s 3-pointer. And then with 25 seconds left, Brooks stole the ball from Randle, leading to a Goodwin layup to cut the Timberwolves’ lead to one, 113-112.
Edwards then missed both of his free throws on the ensuing possession, opening the door for the Suns to come back – an opportunity they were happy to take advantage of.
This Suns team is night and day from last season

Many predicted this Suns team would be destined for the bottom in the NBA standings after trading away Kevin Durant and releasing Bradley Beal in the offseason. But all that infused the team with good vibes. They clearly enjoy playing with each other, and it shows on the court. With this latest win, they moved to 10-6 on the season and remained undefeated in the NBA Cup (2-0).
They are in contention for Vegas heading into the final two games of the NBA Cup group stage against the Sacramento Kings and Oklahoma City Thunder.
