Steve Kerr’s banter served the Warriors well
A little less than four minutes remained until the end of the first quarter between the Warriors and the Jazz. Golden State missed the start: 0-11 after three minutes, already missing eight 3-pointers in eight attempts. The Californians have certainly returned to the goal, but they still give the impression that they did not really enter the match.
Kyle Filipowski takes the opportunity to attack the circle, the Warriors defense is late on all rotations and the action ends with a wide open shot for Keionte Georgewho sanctions without trepidation behind the arc. That’s too much for Steve Kerr : immediate time-out, and a lot of pressure for his players.
Taken in isolation, a sequence like this could pass for a simple bad defensive possession, as we see every game. But this chatter will serve as an electric shock to a group that is too passive.
“They deserve the right to shoot”
“It was just our beginning”responded Steve Kerr after the meeting. “Keyonte George and Lauri Markkanen were two players we wanted to slow down tonight, and we had to pay special attention to them. After ten minutes, George was 4/4 on 3-pointers, on open shots. We lost our concentration. I just wanted to gently remind them that we have to be more focused.”

Trailing 17-19 at the timeout, then 26-35 after 12 minutes, the Warriors would then wake up: only 20 small points conceded in the second quarter and return to the locker room with a twelve-point lead. The message got through and was clearly heard in the locker room.
“We missed a couple of defensive possessions, we were outshot 11-0, and Keyonte George made a couple of 3-point shots by himself…I wouldn’t be happy if I was the coach either.”recognized by Buddy Hield. “This is not the example we want to set for the rest of the season. We want to create good habits, and that starts now.”
Golden State would then pull away for good in the third quarter, with a 25-point lead. A final result that lives up to what we’ve come to expect from an ambitious team facing a modest opponent like Utah, but whose first quarter of the regular season (10-9) hasn’t always lived up to its stated ambitions.
“The message is always the same when you’re at the bottom of a wave and have a losing streak: you have to dig your way out of the hole”summarized by Steve Kerr. “It means fighting every possession, staying true to the game plan. I’m not surprised by our start to the game, the fact that we missed our first five or six shots. When you’re in a bad situation, shots tend to go less. You have to earn the right to make your shots and have a game like the one we’re in right, only if you put in the right energy, only if you have the right energy. concentration »
21-0 with Team C
To restart the machine, Steve Kerr did not hesitate to go without Stephen Curry and rely on his rotation players: Pat Spencer, Quinten Post and Will Richard. It was with this less flashy but hungry five that the Warriors would knock out the Jazz starting the second quarter with a huge 21-0 run.
“This group changed the game”greeted the coach. “Their approach, the way they engaged the audience… It was really nice to see.”
Buoyed by this energy, the Warriors then benefited from the return of Curry, Hield and Moody: 2/12 cumulative shooting in the first quarter, then 27 points between the three in the second as the dynamic began.
This will be necessary to handle the upcoming schedule: two shocks now await the Bay franchise, Wednesday night against the Rockets and then in a week against the Thunder.
