Tom Izzo calls player ‘tough SOB’ after battle with injuries

The Michigan State Spartans basketball team made headlines after a win earlier Tuesday when head coach Tom Izzo had glowing praise for junior forward Koen Carr, who battled a nagging groin injury in the Spartans’ win over East Carolina. The performance was another example of the grit and resilience of a program defined by toughness — a hallmark of Izzo’s storied tenure in East Lansing.
Carr went down early in the first half with what appeared to be a non-contact right leg injury. He was helped off the floor and briefly went to the locker room, but in classic Izzo-era fashion, the junior forward was quickly back on the court just minutes later.
Fox College Hoops has opened its official X (formerly known as Twitter) account, posting a video of the longtime Spartans coach thinking about moment and praising the junior forward’s resilience to deal with adversity.
“He’s a tough SOB.”
Carr finished with 13 points in the 89-56 victory, helping Michigan State improve to 6-0 on the season. The Spartans remained undefeated by controlling every phase of the game and showing the depth and resilience that the Spartans coach continues to demand from his players.
The compliment of the 70-year-old coach carried more weight than usual, reflecting Carr’s growing role as one of the most reliable collaborators of the team. The former four-star recruit out of Atlanta is averaging double figures this season and is earning praise for his athleticism and toughness. His development has become a major story early in the year, as his expanded role and maturity on the court continue to strengthen Michigan State’s balance and identity on both ends.
The Spartans now focus on a Thanksgiving showdown against the No. 16 and also undefeated North Carolina Tar Heels — a true test of their early-season momentum. Izzo’s comment summed it up best, as Carr’s toughness epitomizes the mentality driving Michigan State’s perfect start and growing national confidence.
