Joe Mazzulla falls to the crossbar after ending the Pistons’ winning streak

The The Boston Celtics won back-to-back against the Detroit Pistons during NBA Cup game in the group stage, and also ended their 13-game winning streak. It didn’t come easy, as the Celtics had to dig deep into their pockets to pull out the win, and couldn’t have been happier after the game than the head coach Joe Mazzulla.

“To me, tonight wasn’t so much about the execution as it was about the mindset we played with. … I thought we just had to work hard tonight,” Macula said, via Jay Knight of the Athletics.

The Celtics were able to get big games out of their stars, as Jaylen Brown finished with 33 points and Derrick White finished with 27 points, but it was contributions from other players that impressed Macula.

“It’s funny, everyone looks at the confidence that comes from a successful night, but for me, the confidence comes from responding to failure,” Macula said. “When you look at all these guys tonight that were winning, whether it was Jordan or Baylor or Amari or Josh or Hugo, confidence comes from when you mess up, how do you react to that? And I trust them more when I see that than when they’re doing well.”

The Celtics have shown they have plenty of fight this season, despite the lack of Jayson Tatum. This is a different team than in previous years, but they accept who they are and make the most of the situation. Macula seems to be the right person for the job to lead them, and they have responded as well as anyone.

This team will get better as the season goes on, and they will learn from the mistakes they made along the way. When you do that, you get results similar to how they managed to beat one of the hottest teams in the league.
