Mike Brown kicks off Jalen Brunson’s MVP campaign
During his last seven appearances with the Knicks, Jalen Brunson averaged 31.6 points and 6.1 assists, with a cheeky skill: 52% shooting, including 44% three-pointers. Numbers worthy of an MVP trophy, pushing his season averages to 29.1 points, 6.2 assists and 3.2 rebounds.
Pour Mike Brownit is also time to open the debate. The coach does not understand why his player’s name does not appear more often in conversations about the supreme individual trophy.
“We don’t talk about it enough”, he stated. “It’s still early, so I’m not upset, but tonight he scored 37 points on 21/12 shooting, he often takes it aggressively in the double and makes the right choices. He did what he had to do, and that’s why we don’t talk about it, because that’s what he’s capable of.”
Beyond the raw stats, Mike Brown insists on his leader’s impact on New York’s collective game.
“I hope you start talking about this young man the right way, saying he’s an MVP candidate, because he is. We’re not playing our best basketball right now, but we’re going in the right direction and he’s the driving force behind that. To me, he did what he had to do, which is MVP.”
It remains to be seen whether a collective assessment will follow, an essential condition to actually influence votes. Especially since the competition is particularly tough with Nikola Jokić, Shai Gilgeus-Aleksandar or even Luka Dončić…
