Trophy races | Who will be MIP, sixth man and defender of the year?

The NBA is back in action for more than a month, an opportunity to look at the races for various trophies. On the side of the MFA, Jalen Duren he has a good lead as the favourite, for now, but this race could be breathtaking for the rest of the season. Same thing for the best sixth man trophy, where Jaime Jaquez Jr. currently has an advantage over the competition.

As for the “Defensive Player of the Year” race, Victor Vembanyama is still a heavy favorite, but if he continues to miss matches and ends up with less than 65 matches on the clock, he would be ineligible for this accolade, and the cards would then be completely shuffled.

MFA race: Ryan Rollins’ surprise

Jalen Duren is the one who is currently the favorite for the best progress. It must be said that the Pistons pivot holds the cards with incredible efficiency. He, for example, had an outburst with 31 points and 15 rebounds on 12/13 shooting in mid-November against the Pacerswhich hasn’t happened since Dwight Howard, 15 years ago.

However, behind him is perhaps the most surprising player at the beginning of the season, namely Ryan Rollins. Thrown into the starting five of the Bucks, he multiplied good games with a peak of 32 points against the Warriors of his former mentor, Stephen Curry.

Best Sixth Man Race: It takes a few people to dance

In this race for the best sixth man, two players shine in very different contexts. That’s how it exists Ajay Mitchell who averages 15.2 points, 3.4 assists and 3.7 rebounds, statistical production similar to this what did he suggest James Harden when he won this trophy in 2012. In theory, the Belgian could be a heavy favorite for this title, but there is a player in Florida who is coming back to life in the new offense of the Heat: Jaime Jaquez Jr. After a complicated second season, the winger works better at the beginning of the season and multiplies big performances like this match against the Hornets, at the end of Octoberwhere he scored 28 points with a monstrous +/- of +43!

Defender of the year trophy: with or without Victor Wembanyama?

After a month of competition, he remains the favorite for the “Defender of the Year” election. Victor Vembanyamawhich averages 3.6 blocks since the start of the season. Except once again he could see the trophy slip from his hands. the cause? Calf injury which could keep him away from the courts until December. If he has missed only six matches so far, it is possible that he will finish the season with less than 65 matches on the clock and therefore will not be able to win this trophy again.

Behind the French star, Chet Holmgren would then position himself as a solid alternative. OKC’s interior is the boss of the best defense in the league and he is posting a 1.4 against average.

To close the podium, we find Scottie Barnes. Toronto has had a surprising start to the season and looks to fit into the Top 3 in the East. The performance was made possible by a stout defense, fourth in the league at 110.8 points per 100 possessions, led by Scotty Barnes coming off a career-best season. He is averaging 1.6 blocks (a career high) and 1.4 interceptions, which is currently equal to his career high set last season.
