Jon Sumrall offered a major contract extension amid outside interest

Tulane football head coach Jon Sumrall is at the center of a high-stakes coaching decision after leading the Green Wave to a 27-0 victory over Charlotte to clinch a berth in Friday’s American Conference Championship game against North Texas.
The 43-year-old coach, who holds a 42-11 record at Troy and Tulane, has drawn a lot of interest from SEC programs, particularly the Florida Gators. Auburn and potentially LSU have also expressed interest, depending on Lane Kiffin’s decision at Ole Miss.
In an effort to retain its head coach, Tulane offered Sumrall a multi-year, paid contract extension 4 million dollars a yearwhich would make him the second-highest paid coach in the Group of Five, according to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports. He would make about $10 million per season in the SEC.
A former Kentucky quarterback and SEC assistant at Ole Miss and Kentucky, Sumrall led Tulane to back-to-back American Conference title appearances. He also has two Sun Belt championships from his tenure at Troy. After the win in Charlotte, Sumrall told reporters he would discuss his future with Tulane Athletic Director David Harris, adding that he hopes to coach the Green Wave to an upcoming conference championship regardless of his final decision.
Florida has emerged as the front-runner in the SEC, offering Sumrall a chance to rebuild a nationally prominent program and contend for a spot in the College Football Playoff, while Tulane provides loyalty, stability and a chance to continue to develop a strong Group of Five team. Sumrall made the revelation Saturday night he will decide on his future on Sundayafter talking to his wife Ginny.
