Norman Powell wants a teammate on the first team for all defensive ends
The Miami Heat they roll. On Monday night, they easily tripped up the Los Angeles Clippers and took them to the woodshed en route to a 140-123 victory. This revamped Heat offense continues to impress, as all of their starters have scored in double figures, led by Norman Powell, who put up 30 points in a bit of a revenge game for him against his former team.
It must feel really good for Powell to stick it out to his former team; after all, the The Clippers decided to trade him and bring in John Collinswho has struggled all season in his new digs. Meanwhile, Powell is right at home in Miami, and the Heat’s offense wouldn’t be nearly as explosive if it weren’t for his microwave exploits.
But Powell is not the type to get puffed up and says the turnaround in the team is down to his presence and his presence alone. In fact, Powell is credited with another Heat keeper Davion Mitchell for setting the tone for the team defensively, and wants Mitchell to be awarded the prestigious defensive award for it.
“First team, first team (all defense),” Powell yelled during an interview with Davion Mitchell, per Brady Hawk of Five Reasons Sports. “If they don’t have him in the first team, something is wrong.”
The Heat’s offense gets all the praise, understandably so, but they wouldn’t be where they are (14-7 record) if it wasn’t for their ability to lock down the defensive end. And it starts with Miami’s incredible defensive backbone of Mitchell at the point of attack and Bam Adebayo as the last line of defense.
Heat continues to find a way to reinvent itself

Entering the 2025-26 season, the Heat looked cooked. Tyler Herro will miss the start of the season after offseason ankle and foot surgery. They looked lifeless in a four-game sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2025 NBA playoffs. But head coach Erik Spoelstra has put this Heat team in position to succeed night after night.
Powell also brings so much happiness to every team he plays for; is currently averaging 24.7 points this season to lead an impressive start to the new campaign for this deep Heat team.
