Giannis Antetokounmpo’s calf injury could eliminate him from major awards

On Wednesday afternoon, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported that Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo and his agent consulted with the team about what would be best for his future. Many fans interpreted that as a possible trade for the former league MVP, and things got even more complicated later that night when Antetokounmpo suffered a calf strain during the team’s win over the Detroit Pistons.

Now, after that injury, there are indications that that setback, combined with the previous times Antetokounmpo has missed so far this year, could negatively affect him later down the line.

“It’s important to note that Giannis has already missed 6 games this season. He must play in at least 65 games to remain eligible for MVP, All-NBA and other honors. This calf strain could end his All-NBA and MVP voting streak,” ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel reported on Twitter earlier.

Indeed, Antetokounmpo has already missed a lot of time this year, and on Thursday, Charania announced that Antetokounmpo will be out for two to four weeks due to the strain.

The Bucks have been a huge disappointment this year, currently sitting at 10-13 on the season despite their upset win over Detroit on Wednesday. Even with Antetokounmpo on the floor, Milwaukee hasn’t been able to play much inspired basketball this season, and teams are sure to send the Bucks their best packages for the star in the coming weeks, even as the injury concerns that have become a bigger part of his story continue to grow.

Either way, the Bucks will continue their season Friday night at home against the Philadelphia 76ers. That game is scheduled to start at 20:00 ET from Milwaukee.
