An insider warns that the Spurs are unlikely to trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo

Recently, a rumor has been circulating Spurs as top potential landing spot for Antetokounmpo, probably the most intriguing team building scenario outside of the Lakers hypothetically pairing him with Luka Doncic. The appeal is obvious: putting two of the most dominant physical anomalies in basketball history on the same roster would instantly change the balance of power in the league and create a frontcourt capable of overpowering teams for years.

But according to league insiders, the road to such a blockbuster is much more complicated than fantasy suggests.

Even with the Spurs already accelerating their rebuild with the acquisition of De’Aaron Fox, sources say the organization has shown firm reluctance when it comes to parting ways with key young pieces, particularly Stephon Castle, the reigning Rookie of the Year, and second-round pick Dylan Harper.

Both players are considered long-term cornerstones alongside Vembanyama, and their development timelines are consistent with San Antonio’s slower, methodical roster-building philosophy.

While San Antonio possesses attractive draft capital, multiple reports indicate it would take multiple first-round picks plus Castle for Milwaukee to even begin the conversation, a price the Spurs have shown zero willingness to entertain.

The Spurs’ longtime relationship with Antetokounmpo’s agent Alex Saratsis adds intrigue, but insiders warn that could be overstated in terms of trade leverage.

if anything, Milwaukee remains firm: they are not buying Giannisand they do not lower the bar for the face of the franchise.

Meanwhile, the Lakers, another rumored destination, are considered underfunded unless Milwaukee sees Austin Reaves as a future perennial All-Star or he is comfortable risking losing it for free agency.

All signs point to the same conclusion: San Antonio could theoretically make one of the most fascinating NBA trades ever, and the basketball conditioning would be remarkable, especially for a team that is already 15-6 despite injuries to Fox, Castle, Wembanyama and Harper.

But for now? The Spurs seem committed to their own timeline rather than chasing someone else’s.
