Erik Spoelstra downplays the change in game plan due to Davion Mitchell’s injury
MIAMI – S Miami Heat star Tyler Hero’s MRI reveals toe contusionhis near-term status is uncertain, but he’s not the only key player to miss time with the team. After that The Heat are coming off a tough loss against the Orlando Magic on friday, Davion Mitchell was on the injury report and would ultimately be ruled out for Saturday’s contest against the Sacramento Kings, prompting some to express concern.
The 27-year-old point guard has been a revelation for Miami, averaging 9.7 points and 7.8 assists per game while shooting 51.1 percent from the field and 39 percent from deep. Mitchell was a perfect fit for the team’s new rushing attack and a key part of its success, leading to the head coaching job Erik Spoelstra downplaying that his absence will change their game plan.
“No, not necessarily, and that doesn’t take anything away from what he’s done,” Spoelstra said. “And he plays great basketball on both ends of the court. But Drew (Smith) will step into that role. Jahmir (Young) will be ready. We still want to find our identity regardless.”

Mitchell was considered a team “snake’s head”, as his second-in-command and is doing so effectively while leading the NBA in assist-to-turnover ratio.
“Davion is in charge of this thing,” Bam Adebayo told ClutchPoints after Miami’s win over the Los Angeles Clippers last Monday.
“We don’t do much in the game,” Adebayo continued later on Mitchell’s fit in the attack. “This offense is built for him. We have number one pace, we all run, but it’s like he’s the head of the snake. When Davion gets the ball and he gets up the court like, it can literally be three dribbles, and it just puts the defense on their heels.”

Erik Spoelstra on Heat depth with Tyler Harry, Davion Mitchell out

As it is The Heat will miss their “snake head” in Mitchell with right groin tightness, along with Pelle Larsson dealing with a hip injury, the team will look to their guard depth to hopefully keep the ship afloat. One would have to imagine Drew Smith getting extended play, and maybe even Jahmir Young, as Spoelstra mentioned how deep is the strength of this team.
“The guys are working extremely hard behind the scenes,” Spoelstra told ClutchPoints before Saturday’s game against the Kings. “They prepare, you know, for moments like this. You know, we try to give them an environment where they can grow and surprise us and continue to get better as the season goes on. It’s exciting, you know, you don’t want guys to get hurt, but it’s exciting when guys get opportunities.”
Asked Erik Spoelstra about him, he said depth is the strength of this team, why that is and how it will come into play tonight.

Miami missing both Mitchell and Hero no doubt hurts, but Spoelstra would emphasize focusing on what he and the team can control.
“You know, I just wanted to wait until we know what it is,” Spoelstra said when asked about the results of Herr’s MRI, revealing a toe contusion. “I try not to stress about things you don’t know about or can’t control.”
In any case, it remains to be seen how much time Hero and Mitchell will miss, as after Saturday’s game against the Kings, the Heat embark on a four-game road trip that begins next Tuesday against the Orlando Magic in the NBA Cup quarterfinals.
