Jaylen Brown compares Scotty Barnes’ strength to a Ninja Turtle
Scottie Barnes has heard plenty of compliments during his rapid rise to NBA stardom, but Sunday night’s remark from the Boston Celtics All-Star Jailen Brown may go down as one of the most memorable and bizarre.
After Boston’s victory over 121-113 Toronto RaptorsBraun boasted Barnes’ physicality and relentless style of playcomparing the Toronto forward to a cartoon icon known for raw strength and chaotic energy.
“Scottie Barnes is strong… he got that extra chromosome strength. He’s like one of the Ninja Turtles, man.” Brown he joked in his streamcausing laughter and confusion across social media (h/t NBA Central).
The comment was not meant to be disrespectful; in fact Brown stated that he spoke with Barnes’ unique blend of size, motor and physical build, which makes him difficult to match.
Barnes showed some of that power Sunday with 18 points, 11 rebounds and solid interior defense, helping the Raptors nearly erase a 23-point second-half deficit.
Toronto trailed by two possessions late in the game, but Boston’s depth and execution proved too much.
Brandon Ingram led the Raptors with 30 points. while Barnes continued his steady two-way production, posting his 14th double-double of the season.
For the Celtics, Brown scored 30 points and Derrick White had 27, including 14 in the first quarter to set the tone.
Boston’s win was their fifth in a row and seventh in their last eight as they continue to climb the Eastern Conference standings.
Meanwhile, Toronto has dropped three consecutive home games, its longest streak at Scotiabank Arena this season.
As for Barnes, Brown’s unexpected comparison didn’t seem to bother him.
Whether it’s meant literally or not, it’s clear the league is starting to recognize Barnes, shell or not, as a force opponents can’t ignore.
