Steve Kerr welcomes Jonathan Cumminga’s “ambition”, but there’s a catch

It looks like the much publicized saga of Jonathan Cumminga and the Golden State Warriors it won’t end soon. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

The final chapter came Sunday, as Kuminga was a healthy player in a 123-91 win over the Chicago Bulls. Even with the fractious affair, the young forward didn’t earn a millisecond of playing time.

On 95.7 The Game’s “Villard & Dibs,” coach of the Warriors Steve Kerr explained that Kuminga did not play well recently, which led to his benching. He said it was part of the team’s “change” amid their challenging stretch.

Kerr too fired a rude remark about 23-year-old Kuminga.

“He’s obviously a guy with a lot of ambition, which I love. He wants to be a star. He’s got an ability that gives him that hope and gives us that hope. There has to be a consistent level of play to do that,” Kerr said.

The warning at the end was telling, as Kerr repeatedly pointed out Cumming’s inconsistent play. Although he has all the physical tools to be an effective two-way player, Kuminga’s mental toughness and basketball IQ have been questioned.

“We’re talking about the best basketball league in the world. So the consistency has to be there for us. If it’s not there, then it’s a lot harder for me to give him consistent minutes and give him starts,” Kerr added.

Kuminga, who skipped college to play for the now-defunct G League Ignite, started the first few games before being benched again. Now, it seems Kerr’s patience is wearing thinr than ever.

He is averaging 12.4 points on 43.8% shooting in his career, 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists. He is also averaging a career-worst 2.5 turnovers.
