Brady Cook’s assessment of NFL debut will give Sam Darnold fans PTSD

The New York Jets fell to 3-10 with a Week 14 loss to the Miami Dolphins. The team he turned to Brady Cook on the Sunday after Tyrod Taylor suffered a groin injury in the first quarter. The undrafted rookie threw two interceptions and took six sacks in his NFL debut. And after 34-10, Cook gave Jets fans an unexpected flashback.

“The first few series were definitely fast and I think when you still don’t trust her and things are moving fast, you might as well put a little extra heat on her to protect yourself from the people you can’t see — the ghosts,” Cook said, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

The phrase immediately came to mind Sam Darnold’s infamous “seeing ghosts” play. of 2019. In his second season, Darnold was upset by the New England Patriots’ defense on Monday Night Football. Committed five turnovers in New York’s 33-0 rout. And, being the Jets, he happened to get a game mic.

After an interception in the red zone in the second quarter, Darnold came to the sideline and infamously told his coach, “I see ghosts. The clip exploded and quickly became part of the Jets’ rich history of embarrassment.”

Darnold survived the temporary exile and moved on to better things. But New York remains in quarterback purgatory.

The team tabbed Tyrod Taylor as the starting quarterback after Justin Fields was benched before Week 12. But with Taylor out and Fields inactive with a knee injury, Cook got the call. Pressed into action, the first-year passer went 14/30 for 163 yards with no scores and two interceptions.

The Dolphins scored 21 points in the first quarter. Isaiah Williams responded with a punt return touchdown. But New York could only collect three more points the rest of the way.

The Jets were officially eliminated from the postseason with a loss in Week 14. The 34-10 loss extended the Jets’ playoff drought to 15 straight seasons, the longest streak in the four major American sports.

Taylor has yet to return to practice and is questionable for Week 15. Cook is currently getting all first-team reps. He will make his first career start against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday if Taylor is unable to play.
