Marc Stein reveals list decision ‘virtual lock’

The The Golden State Warriors posted a 13-14 record to start the season, and while there is much uncertainty about the direction of the franchise, one NBA insider recently noted that one of the group’s key players may have provided more stability to the organization.
According to Marc Stein, the Warriors are expected to convert guard Pat Spencer’s two-way contract to a standard deal towards the end of the campaign.
“Much like Ryan Nembhardt in Dallas, Golden State’s Pat Spencer is considered a virtual lock to turn a two-way deal into a standard NBA contract before the end of the season,” Stein wrote. “Like Nembhardt and all other players on two-way contracts, Spencer can only play in 50 regular-season games for the Warriors while on the two-way. As reader Nick Thoreson notes — correcting my initial version — Spencer has been active in every game this season … including eight in which he didn’t play. At the end of January, if he continued to be active for every game, Golden State would have 25 games left before the Feb. 5 trade deadline, when the picture of his roster for the 29-year-old’s conversion would obviously be much clearer.
In 19 games this season, Spencer averaged 15.9 minutes, 7.4 points and 2.4 rebounds, all career highs.
“Energy and competitive spirit (are) a big part of winning basketball,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr told NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole. And that’s what Pat brought us. There’s a different atmosphere on the floor and in the locker room with Pat doing what he does. He changed our team.”
It rIt remains to be seen whether Spencer can continue to develop, but the 29-year-old figures to be part of the Warriors’ immediate plans.
