Victor Wembanyama played in the NBA Cup finals after the death of his grandmother

Victor Vembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs fell to the New York Knicks, 124-113, in NBA Cup final at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Vembanjama came off the bench and scored 18 points, six rebounds and two blocks. The Spurs led most of the game, but fell short in the fourth quarter, allowing the Knicks to claim the season tourney title.
However, 21-year-old Vembanjama, suffered a greater loss just a few hours before the competition. In the post-game conference, it was revealed that his grandmother had passed away.
“I’m sorry, I lost someone today,” said the Spurs center, who became emotional as he spoke to reporters.
One could only imagine how difficult it must have been for Vembanyama to play, in a high-stakes game, despite losing a loved one. However, he continued and did his best to help the Spurs. That alone is an admirable act.
It’s been a challenging season for the two-time All-Star, to say the least. He missed several weeks with a calf injury, and now has to process a personal loss.
It is a sad turn of events for Vembanyama, who he flew 50 fans to Las Vegas to watch the Spurs play the Knicks. But San Antonio is sure to provide him with emotional support as he processes the unfortunate news.
It remains unclear whether Vembanyama will take some time off to mourn the death of his grandmother.
The Spurs will play against the Washington Wizards on Thursday.
