Chris Haynes weighs in on whether LA should take down the NBA Cup banner

After the victory of the New York Knicks in NBA Cup championship game against the San Antonio Spurs, it was announced they did not plan to raise the flag in his home arena. It’s a stark contrast to the two previous NBA Cup winners Los Angeles Lakers and the Milwaukee Bucks, respectively, both of which hoisted championship banners.

This led to the question of Fr whether or not those teams could take down their banners in light of the Knicks’ decision, NBA insider Chris Haynes said in a recent segment on Sirius XM NBA Radio. And Haynes believes it’s possible the Lakers could eventually decide to take down their banner in honor of their NBA Cup championship.

“I think the Lakers might as well take that banner down now,” Haynes said. “They didn’t want to put it up. Now that the Knicks are taking this stance, the Lakers are going to be like, ‘look, we didn’t want to do that, we compromised, and we got his long, white banner of whatever color it’s hanging up, and we don’t want it up. Let’s take it down.'”

It’s unclear if the Lakers actually decided to remove the banner, and it’s not yet clear if they even had those internal discussions. But what was true was that it was The Lakers clearly didn’t want to hang the banner to begin with. It was reported that the team felt pressure from the NBA to eventually hang one in the rafters.

The Bucks, winners of their second tournament of the season, also decided to hang a banner in their arena.
