Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is closing in on Wilt Chamberlain’s 20-point record

The The Oklahoma City Thunder have been extremely consistent this season, regardless of recent losses. There’s an old saying in the NBA that teams absorb the identity of their best players, and it makes sense that OKC is like a machine that never fails given that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander works. Night in, night out, the Thunder know they can rely on Gilgeous-Alexander to lead the team in scoring, which then translates into wins, just like Monday night in a 119-103 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Gilgeous-Alexander had 31 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in another game-winning effort to move the Thunder to 25-3 on the season and record his 100th consecutive 20-point game. He is the epitome of consistency in today’s NBA, and he is now only 27 games away from breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s record for most consecutive 20-point games, with 126.

There’s simply no stopping arguably the best player in the NBA right now because he can get his buckets every which way. For as many free throws as the Thunder star gets for being a supposed “free throw dealer,” he shot just six free throws on Monday. In fact, over the past five games, he’s averaged just 5.4 free throw attempts per contest.

The only way Gilgeous-Alexander won’t score 20 a game is if he goes out early with an injury, which nobody wants to happen, knock on wood.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has to be appreciated by more than just Thunder fans

Size is often polarized. But Gilgeous-Alexander is a success story that needs to be celebrated by more than just Thunder fans. Nothing was handed to him; he’s worked to become arguably the best player in the NBA, and as he’s said in the past, his whole life has been really consistent.

The Thunder star is now averaging 32.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game, and with OKC rollingno one should be surprised if he wins his second straight MVP award.
