Rich Paul hits out at LeBron James about playing on Christmas Day
Rich Paul addressed LeBron James’ recent comments regarding playing on Christmas Dayoffering context around the sacrifices of the NBA schedule and the backlash that followed James’ comments.
Speaking on the latest episode of Game Over with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul, Paul discussed James’ comments ahead of Christmas match of Los Angeles Lakers against Houston Rockets.
“I actually thought most people reacted to it as understanding. The way you look at it, it’s the sacrifices these guys make.”
Max Kellerman added context to James’ longevity, noting the consistency needed to remain a central figure in marquee games.
“And he’s been doing it for 20 years.”
Paul then expanded on James’ role in the holiday games and what is often overlooked when his comments circulate publicly.
“21. Christmas game. 21 of them. And again, when you talk about attendance, you’re taking that away, but that’s your job, too. So what I saw him say was, ‘I’m looking forward to it.’ People skip it. And he also said that it’s something he’s honored to be able to do, but if you ask me what I’d rather be doing, I’d rather be with my family, like everybody else would rather be with their family.
LeBron James ponders holiday sacrifice as Lakers host Rockets on Christmas Day

James’ original statement came after the Lakers’ 103-88 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, when he spoke with ClutchPoint’s Tomer Azarly about the emotional balance between professional responsibilities and family time during the holidays.
“I’d rather be at home with my family. But I mean, it’s a game, it’s a game I love. It’s a game I watched when I was a kid on Christmas, I’ve watched a lot of the greatest players play the game on Christmas. It’s always been an honor to play it. Obviously, I’ll be completely honest, so I’d like to call home all day with my family. I’ve got to go out there and perform and I’m looking forward to it.”

The comments came as the Lakers (19-8) continue to navigate the early part of the season while balancing a demanding national schedule. Los Angeles will face the Rockets (17-9) on Christmas Day at 8:00 PM ET in a nationally televised game on ABC and ESPN, marking another high-profile holiday appearance for James.
James has long been one of the NBA’s most notable Christmas games, regularly featured in showcases for his longevity, production and star power. The 40-year-old holds multiple league records at the break, including most points scored (507), most games played (20) and most wins (11). This year’s competition will mark his 21st career Christmas appearance.
As the Lakers prepare to take on Houston, Paul’s remarks underscored the broader reality facing veterans balancing family life with the demands of an NBA calendar that consistently puts its brightest stars on the league’s biggest stages.
