Erik Spoelstra highlights the ‘glue’ that is Miami’s unsung hero

Although he has been remarkable in his comeback from a sprained ankle that has kept him out of the past five games, Spoelstra explained to ClutchPoints how Lars the “glue” of the team.

“Yeah, I think it’s a comfort level with everybody in the locker room, you know, both the players and the staff,” Spoelstra said of Larsson’s basketball compatibility before Saturday’s game against the Indiana Pacers. “He just does a lot of intangibles. It’s probably a little easier for people to see that when he hits 21, but he literally doesn’t have to score to be the glue in any lineup he plays in, that those intangibles, getting those intangibles, you know, probably aren’t celebrated enough around the league.”

As Spoelstra mentioned, Larsson doesn’t need to be the best scorer to impact the game, as he has the traits that make him play everywhere on the floor, whether in the starting lineup or off the bench.

“You should have seen his rehab sessions, whether it was on the bike at first, it was just everything,” Spoelstra said after the win over the Hawks, via Heat Central on X, formerly Twitter. “Almost vomit level. I went into one of those sessions and then his court sessions. He just pushes the envelope. And so, he had conditioning. It’s different than game conditioning. But he was able to last those 29 minutes.”

There’s no denying the respect he has for the entire team, even Miami’s leading scorer, Norman Powell, called Larson “gamer.” Powell specifically mentions how Larson affects the game on both ends of the floor.

“Man, he’s a player,” Powell said after scoring 25 points on Friday. “He changed the game just with his physicality, his energy and effort on both ends of the floor. He kept the game alive, made it tough and tough every matchup he was in, put himself in the game, got fouled. That’s what we missed about him.”

Either way, Larson looks to continue to bring the versatility the Heat need down the stretch to enter 2o26 on a positive note. With a 16-15 team, Miami looks to pick up wins Saturday against the Pacers and a key game Monday night against the Denver Nuggets.
