Jordi Fernandez urges Cam Thomas to do more off the field
The Brooklyn Nets lost several key guys on New Year’s Day, so it was no surprise to see them suffer a big loss to the Houston Rockets, a 120-96 loss to open the new calendar year. Their starting lineup is without Michael Porter Jr. she just couldn’t get anything going on offense, which shouldn’t have surprised anyone considering that Cam Thomas remained on the bench to start the procedure.
Thomas, in his 23 minutes off the bench, still led the team in scoring with 21 on 8-13 shooting. He’s clearly the best shot creator on the Nets’ roster, and the 24-year-old guard doesn’t seem to be enjoying his reduced role on the team. But the Nets’ demands on him are crystal clear; head coach Jordi Fernandez simply wants Thomas to be a more impressive total player instead of just filling in one box score column.
“Good scoring punch with the minutes he’s playing … Obviously his superpower is his scoring, but again, I need better defense, I need better play,” Fernandez said of Thomas in his postgame presser, via ClutchPoints Nets beat reporter Eric Slater.

Cam Thomas’ time with the Nets is coming to an end

For all the demands anyone can make of Thomas, it might be easier to accept that he’s that kind of player: a microwave shooter who can provide instant offense for a team in need of scoring help. Thomas certainly has some qualities who can be a winning player, but the Nets aren’t exactly willing to put in the time to see if he can or can’t be a part of the next winning team in Brooklyn.
And with Thomas refusing to commit his future to the Nets franchise, opting instead to accept a qualifying offer that has him on track to enter unrestricted free agency at the end of the year, Brooklyn has no reason to prioritize him anyway.
