Happiest birthday to Danny Avdia
Gathering Night in San Antonio for Thiago Splitter and Sidi Sissoko, both were spent by the Spurs, and if everything went well, I can thank Donovan Klingan, the author of the best match of his career, but also Danny Avdia. On the evening of his 25th birthday, the Israeli winger confirmed that he is in great shape with a nice triple-double: 29 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. The day before, he scored 34 points, 11 assists and 7 rebounds against the Pelicans.
The result: two straight wins, and the Blazers continue to cling to their playoff dreams despite the absence of six players, including all playmakers. “We are doing absolutely everything in our power, of our own free will, to continue to fight and play according to our identity, i.e. to circulate the ball” explains the Portland winger. “We have injured players, travel, guys not feeling well, illnesses, all of that… but we don’t care. We have no excuses.”
The pleasure of playing together
While the group could have collapsed following the indictment of Chauncey Billups, Tiago Splitter has created a team that looks just like him: “This group shows character and that’s all I can ask of them”. And what does he think about Deni Avdia’s performance? “Danny was outstanding with 10 assists and only two turnovers, which represents a new phase in his development” replies the Portland coach.
Helped by the outside skill of Klingan, but also Tumani Kamara, the Israeli punished the Spurs defense with his shifts, and the distribution of the ball and the solidarity of the group excites him.
“I really like playing with this team. I’ve been in the NBA for about six years and this team, this friendly team, these players… it’s just a pleasure to play with them.” he insists. “They fight, they defend, we’re a really amazing team. I feel like our future is very bright. Matches like this, where everyone is tired, where it’s hard, physically, and we come out with a win, it’s huge. Really huge.”
