Max Christie electrifies the Mavericks offense
“He has our absolute trust and we almost get mad when he doesn’t shoot.” Anthony Davis sums up the general impression of the group with Max Christiewho was already his teammate in the Lakers. The young guard is known for punishing 3-pointers in the corners, but in Dallas we’d like to see him move away from this almost passive role.
A priori the message got through as the person in question remained on three good games with 25 points against the Blazers, 18 against the Sixers and above all 24 points on 10 of 13 shooting in win against the Rockets.
“We approached the match with good energy, great intensity and it was nice to win”responds Anthony Davis. “Especially with Max hitting some impressive dunks, probably the most dunks he’s ever had in a game. B-Will (Brandon Williams) also had a dunk tonight. Anytime these guys get dunks, especially with that much power, it gets the team and the crowd excited.”
Indeed, Max Christie hit three dunks and it was the talk of the locker room. “The three might be the most I’ve ever made in a game. It feels good to be able to be athletic, attack the rim and finish with some dunks.” he laughs. “It’s mostly a matter of mentality: having an aggressive state of mind. That’s really what it is for me: being able to make that click and be aggressive. Obviously, if I can score, that’s great, but I think it also opens things up for my teammates.”
Surrounded by legends to thrive
To help him progress, Max Christie can count on the trust of Jason Kidd and Anthony Davis, as well as the advice of Klay Thompson. “When you get advice from one of the greatest shooters of all time, you have to take it and put it into practice. And I think Christy did that.” note Jason Kidd. “Klay doesn’t make all his shots, but he has the confidence to make the next one. We’ve all heard it about Steph (Curry): It’s not what he did on the last shot, it’s what he thinks he’s going to do on the next one. That’s what separates the ‘average’ players from the ‘great’ players from the one ‘great’ player that’s going to be, so I hope Christ helps. The best.”
That confidence can be found on this money-time dunk to fend off a Rockets comeback and seal a Mavericks victory. A lot of young guys would be hesitant to penetrate and go all the way, but Max Christie found himself in isolation, with Justin Holiday on his back, and eliminated him to nail this big dunk.
“Being able to finish close to the circle, it expands my game. Defenders play me differently and my ability to read them helps me create – find my open partners too” he concludes. “So it’s a mentality thing: staying aggressive and continuing to build on that.”
